Position Deep Dive: The Second Baseman (The Pivot Man)

If Shortstop is the Captain of the Infield, Second Base is the Technician.

While they don’t have the cannon arm of a Shortstop or Third Baseman, the Second Baseman must have the quickest hands and feet on the diamond.

The game has changed. Second Base used to be a spot for light-hitting, defensive specialists. Now, with the athleticism of modern players, it’s a premier position that requires grit, agility, and the ability to make split-second decisions while a runner is bearing down on you.

The Job Description (The Pivot)

The defining play of a Second Baseman is the Double Play Pivot.

It is one of the most dangerous and difficult plays in baseball. You have to catch a feed from the Shortstop or Third Baseman, find the bag with your foot, turn your body, avoid the sliding runner, and make a strong throw to first—all in under 1.4 seconds.

  • The Range: You have to cover the middle of the field (up the middle) and the deep hole between first and second.
  • The Relay: On balls hit to Right Center or Right Field, you are the cut-off man. You have to go out, communicate with the outfielder, catch the ball, and turn to fire a strike to home plate.
  • The “Short” Throw: Most of your throws are short and require a “flick” of the wrist rather than a full windup. You need to be able to throw from different arm angles (sidearm, underhand).

The Profile: Who Belongs at the Keystone?

The Physical Tools:

  • Quickness > Speed: You don’t need to be the fastest runner in a straight line, but you need explosive lateral quickness. Your first two steps are everything.
  • Fast Hands: This is non-negotiable. The transfer from glove to hand must be instantaneous. If you have “slow hands,” the runner is safe at first.
  • Durability: You are going to get taken out by slides. You need the toughness to hang in the pivot and complete the play.

The Mental Tools (The Grinder):

  • Fearlessness: Turning a double play requires you to stand your ground while a runner tries to disrupt you. You can’t bail out early.
  • Situational Awareness: You need to know who is covering the bag on a steal attempt (you or the Shortstop?) based on the hitter and the pitch.

The Toolbox: What to Train

If you want to play Second Base, put away the radar gun. Nobody cares how hard you throw; they care how fast you get rid of it.

  1. The Pivot Footwork There are different ways to turn two: the “Across the Bag,” the “Step Back,” and the “Drag.” You need to master all of them so you can adjust to where the throw takes you.
  • Drill: “Feeds and Turns.” Have a partner toss you balls at the bag. Work on tagging the base and clearing your feet to throw.
  1. The Underhand Flip This looks easy, but it’s where most errors happen. The “feed” to the Shortstop on a double play needs to be firm and accurate, chest-high. It’s a stiff-wristed toss, not a bowling motion.
  • Drill: “Flip Drills” from 10 feet away. Aim for your partner’s chest every time.
  1. Agility Ladder Your feet need to move independently of your hands.
  • Drill: Ladder drills focusing on lateral movement and quick direction changes.

The Pro Study

The Standard: Dustin Pedroia. He wasn’t big. He wasn’t the fastest. But his first step was explosive, and his hands were lightning fast. He won Gold Gloves because he was technically perfect.

The Modern Star: Ozzie Albies / Jose Altuve. Small stature, huge impact. They use their low center of gravity to change directions instantly. Watch how Altuve pivots on a double play—his feet are a blur.

The Bottom Line

Second Base is the engine room of the defense.

It’s not about flashy arm strength; it’s about efficiency, quickness, and toughness. If you have lightning-fast hands and aren’t afraid of contact, the middle of the infield is yours.
